[EP] dated for January 3rd
Jan. 3rd, 2012 01:29 amI guess you could say that I've got a thing for bridges. Oh, sure, I've spent most of my free time since the change swinging from buildings, but when I need to stop and catch my breath, it's not the side of some palace or townhouse that I perch myself on.
Nope, it's the Waterloo Bridge.
It's not half as impressive as anything in New York -- what is? -- but it's familiar. Like , I dunno, a second-cousin twice removed from the George Washington Bridge. You kinda have a feel for them, even if you've never met them. There's some shared DNA. The same basic underlying structure. The view's not as great and I'm not that elevated off the street, but I'm perched on the edge all the same, fingers curled around the brick to keep from tumbling down onto the frozen river below as I lean forward.
I was hanging upside down earlier just for the hell of it, but this is a little more comfortable. Not that I've got much of a problem hanging upside down for hours on end, but my stamina on that front's not what it used to be without the proportional strength of a spider to back it up. The suit's warmer than I'm used to, all black leather and lined gloves and loose woolen pants. The boots are an especially clever alteration of the design, and a far cry from my lycra 'n spandex booties that have served me well over the years, but the mask could use some work. Too thick. Makes it hard to breathe sometimes, which is why I stopped in the first place. I had it rolled up to my nose for the past couple of minutes, but I roll it back down, feeling warm air reflect against my skin as I exhale.
It's a nice night. Quiet. The kind of thing that makes you think if you're not too careful, but I'm up here to clear my head, not fill it up. This'll all disappear soon, if experience is anything to go by. And it is something to go by, lemme tell ya. January's traditionally been a bad month for me, so I remember those experiences better than most. Still, it's strange to think. A whole city'll wash out with the tide...
I don't startle when someone makes their approach. There are enough steampunk superheroes running around for it to be expected, and besides, I'm an old hand at lurking.
Also, it looks cooler if I don't react.
That might be more important, actually.
"Howdy."
Technically open to anyone, but superheroes are especially welcome. He's on the Waterloo Bridge and is dressed like so, which is pretty a distant cry from any iconic Spider-Man costume. No spider-logo, no webbing. He could just be a dude in a ski mask. (He's not, but.)
